Although hiking has always been a popular activity, an influx of new hikers took their exercise outdoors during the pandemic. Guess what? Many have continued to hike because, for one, it is excellent exercise. Secondly, people are discovering the mood-enhancing results of spending time outdoors connecting to nature.
Whether you are already into hiking or just getting started, here are some hiking tips you should consider to ensure that you engage in this outdoor activity safely and injury-free.
1) Get yourself a good pair of shoes with good support and traction. The same applies to socks. A good pair of socks will contain a combination of wool and nylon or spandex, which helps prevent the socks from bunching while walking and blisters on the feet by catching the sweat.
2) Map out your journey beforehand, especially if you are unfamiliar with the hiking trail, or not with a guide or a group.
3) Check the weather beforehand. Have some rain gear on hand just in case.
4) Bring some snacks that provide extra energy when needed.
5) Don't rely on your mobile phone to provide directions. Instead, get a paper map or compass that helps you figure out your path.
6) Bring enough water to cover the hike. A good rule of thumb is ½ liter per hour of hiking.
7) Dress in layers. Wear moisture-wicking items.
8) Carry a backpack to store all of the items. Include sun protection, a small cutting tool, lip balm, repellant, and a hat in your gear.
9) If you are planning to hike at a national park, wildlife preserve, state park, out of the country, etc., be sure to check the website, your guide or group, or call beforehand to find out if there is a cost involved or if permits are required.
You will thoroughly enjoy your hiking experience if you fully prepare yourself beforehand! You will already have the essentials you need at your disposal.
Are you ready to go hiking? I'd love to help you plan your trip!
